NOLA decks need heavy-duty protection

Gulf Coast sun, afternoon thunderstorms, and humidity destroy deck finishes fast. A deck sealed with Home Depot $30/gallon clear sealer lasts 9 months here. We use marine-grade or specifically Gulf-Coast-rated products that last 2-3 years. We also pick the right window — decks shouldn't be stained in 90%+ humidity days or after rain. We check the 5-day forecast before scheduling and build in weather buffers.

The FixRight Guarantee

If our workmanship fails within 12 months, we come back and make it right — free. No fine print.

Straight Answers.

Stain vs. seal — which should I get?

Clear sealer = waterproofing only, 2-3 year life, preserves natural wood color. Semi-transparent stain = sealer + tint, 2-3 year life, shows wood grain. Solid stain = paint-like coverage, 4-5 year life, hides grain. For NOLA humidity, we recommend at minimum a semi-transparent stain — pure clear sealer doesn't hold up.

Do I need to replace rotted boards before staining?

Yes. Stain doesn't fix rot, it just hides it temporarily. We inspect every board, flag rotted ones, and replace them before staining. Usually 2-5 boards need replacement on a 5+ year old NOLA deck.

How long until I can walk on the deck after staining?

Light foot traffic in 24 hours. Furniture and heavy use in 72 hours. Water exposure in 5 days. If rain hits before then, the stain can spot. We watch the forecast carefully.

Can you stain a deck that's never been stained?

Yes, this is actually easier than restaining — no old product to strip. New decks should wait 3-6 months after install before first stain to let the wood dry out and accept stain properly.

Do you do composite decks?

Composite decks (Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon) don't need staining. But we do clean, fix, and replace composite boards. If you're not sure what your deck is made of, send a photo and we'll tell you.
